The Purpoodock Club: A letter written by a friend of Purpoodock

The Purpoodock Club                                     Written by a friend of Purpoodock

Looking to join a championship golf course where the greens are smooth and fast, the fairways lush and the membership friendly, Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth is the perfect choice.

Purpoodock, a private golf course founded in 1922, has dropped its initiation fee for all membership categories in 2016. That includes single and family memberships, junior memberships along with social memberships and other categories that can fit one's particular needs in a busy lifestyle.

Members and guests raved about the course conditions in 2015 with even better things expected under the guidance of golf course superintendent Rob Knott, who is in his third season at Purpoodock.

The course annually has some of the finest greens in Maine. Last summer, the course hosted the New England Junior Championship. The region's top juniors and their state directors were impressed with Purpoodock's condition and the friendliness of its staff, led by Head Golf Professional & Director of Club Operations, Tony Decker.

Purpoodock is a golfers' club, pure and simple. If you love the game, you'll love Purpoodock. With its multiple tees, Purpoodock offers something for all ability levels. The course offers a challenging, but fair test of golf. Purpoodock is a classic styled layout. The par 3's are among the best on any one course in the state. The par 4's are very scenic and easily reachable in two shots. Two out of the three par 5s are reachable in two shots for the low handicappers.

Purpoodock has made numerous upgrades over the years to improve playability. New maintenance equipment has enabled the grounds crew to fine tune the course. Tees were built or lengthened, traps added or reconfigured and trees trimmed to improve line of ball flight and provide more sunlight to some greens. The par-4, 18th hole added a new tee a few years ago. From the back tees, the tee shot is a straight on effort over the marsh. The second shot has to be finessed to a green guarded by traps.
A great finishing hole.

Another advantage of playing Purpoodock: It's a walkable course unlike many of the newer golf courses. Some of the game's greatest players walked Purpoodock's fairways during the three-year run of the Union Mutual Seniors Classic from 1984 to 1986. Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Gary Player, Don January and Miller Barber were just some of the golfers who played in the invitational tournament before huge crowds. A plaque adjacent to the par-5, 16th tee commemorates "The King" eagling the hole in each of the three rounds in 1986. Casper called Purpoodock's greens "the best putting surfaces I have ever seen". Purpoodock's conditions have only gotten better since the Seniors Classic.

The course has hosted the men's and women's Maine Amateurs, the Maine Open, the Southern Maine Women's Championship and countless other tournaments through the years.

With a membership comes all the amenities that a private course offers: fine and casual dining, a full function facility for club and outside events, a fully stocked pro shop led by PGA professional Tony Decker, who has been honored many times by the New England PGA for his contributions to the game, practice areas, including driving range, chipping area and putting green, an active men's and women's membership, a full slate of member social events, a friendly, knowledgeable clubhouse and pro shop staff and an environmentally conscious, meticulous golf course staff. Purpoodock built a new clubhouse a few years ago. The Greenside lounge is the focal point where many fun activities are held. It's the place to be on Friday nights.

You can always find a game at Purpoodock. There are many golfing groups to discover one's niche. Purpoodock has an active tournament schedule which makes it easy for golfers to play with other players. Imagine sitting on the expansive outside deck with a beverage of your choice discussing the round with your foursome as the sun begins to dip behind the trees. The course is resplendent in its summer colors and winter is just a memory.
